Route 120 - Dark / Normal

Although he's returning from his expedition to Route 120 empty-handed, Leonardo doesn't feel it a waste of time. He got to watch a beautiful once-in-a-lifetime performance by an entire swarm of milotic in all their elegance, and that was enough for him. Kind of. After all, as enjoyable as it had been, he can't help thinking he'd really have liked his girlfriend to watch it with him.

It couldn't be helped though. Rhian argued that she had lots of work left to do for her new boss and that was the end of the conversation.

Oh well. Leo could think of other ways to make this trip worthwhile. For example, besides watching waterworks, he could always use this chance to train with his newly caught monferno. The fire monkey is still a little cheeky, erratic and unreliable. Leonardo hopes to fix that.

He taps the monferno's pokéball open.

She's not ready. Good lord, she's not.

As if trying to kill him on their first meeting hadn't been enough, the monferno jumps at him with a Flame Wheel. Again. He has his stars to thank for allowing him to survive a second deadly attack by this murderous pokémon.

"This is not how things are going to work."

[break][break]

He raises a hand in front of the monferno. The universal human sign for stopping. He hopes it works for primates as well.

"If you want to fight me that much, we'll do it fairly. No fire moves."

With every keyword, he makes whatever hand sign he feels appropriate for the message he means to transmit. It's not too accurate, he realizes, but it's the best he can do at the moment, stuck in the wild with no apparent translator to mediate their deal.

The monferno's next strike is, as instructed, an average kick.

When Leonardo notices the intruding watchog watching them curiously from the safe distance of ten feet away, he has a fraction of a second to wonder if their inner conflict wasn't what drove it close. Before he can decide what he wants to do with it, the monferno chases it away with a couple of kicks and a punch.

Route 120 - Dark / Normal

At first, Leonardo thought the monferno's aggressiveness came from being in an environment as hot as the place he found her in. Fiery Path, right next to Mt. Chimney? That route could make anyone lose their cool, both literally and figuratively.

Now, he's realizing there's an anger deep inside her that only thrashing and fighting can quell.

Leonardo was never like this himself, but he supposes this is what dealing with anger issues as a teenager would have been like.

When the wild sneasel happens upon their sparring session, Leonardo is both relieved and concerned. Relieved, because finally he'd have a bit of respite from the monferno's incessant hits. Concerned, because instead he'd have to deal with her temper tantrum against a wild pokémon.

Or not.

The monferno is quick to attack, a kick here and a punch there. She seems happy to have another contender, but the sneasel is not subject to Leonardo's rules and so it finds it easy to slash at her with one of its metal claws. A few rounds of this and the unfairness of this match has her painting.

Hurt, the monferno turns back to him. Waiting. Surprised to find the monferno was actually waiting on his cue, he offers a prompt nod, allowing her to unleash her Mach Punch and a fire-imbued kick in the form of Flame Wheel.

Not willing to continue the fight, the sneasel flees.

Route 120 - Dark / Normal

In the monferno's outrage, Leo almost misses the fleck of bright blue fur.

Due to a lack of opponents around the area left willing to take her on, monferno is in the middle of doing some false strikes at the air when she hits a small caterpie hidden in the tall grass.

[break][break]

Thinking it just another small fry, Leonardo is tempted to let the monferno have her way and use the caterpie as her own personal boxing bag.

However, something catches his eye. The caterpie is no normal caterpie. Its coat doesn't blend all that well with the scenary and, when hit, the color almost seems to blur before it takes on a much darker hue.

A shiny.

"Wait, go easy on this one. I want it."

To make a legitimate addition to his team or simply to show off, Leonardo's not sure yet. But the monferno doesn't need to know that.

Rather than her preferred go-to combination of attacks, the monferno hopes to confuse the wild zorua with her Acrobatics. First they're aimless, not meant to damage it. As the zorua becomes entranced with her performance, she gets closer and closer each time until the move strikes true.

Leonardo is not sure what the gesture would be for 'good job', so he instead opts to approach her and pat her on the back.

Then, he tosses a pokéball.
